One of the oldest and deep rooted traditions in the Mediterranean is Hookah -
Sisha, with both men and women finding great pleasure in smoking the water
pipe.
In Iran the hookah is known as a ghalyun. It is similar in many ways to the
Arabic hookah but has its own unique attributes.
The tobacco made available for hookah smoking comes in a variety of flavors.
Traditionally, long pieces of tobacco are mixed with a sugar-based syrup
including extracts and bits of fruit. The fruit flavors really come out in the
smoke, and the cooling action of the hookah provides added smoothness. Flavors
include apple, peach, raspberry, mixed fruit, orange, red wine and MANY more.
Combining flavors makes for a unique experience. The flavor and method of the
hookah is the most eloquent and exotic in the world. It provides the maximum
smoking pleasure and the highest conviviality. The hookah is frequently served
along with tea and sweets to ameliorate the change in blood pressure that may
be caused by smoking it.
